Brno - Brno will lay the remains of architect Ivan Ruller in the honorary cemetery of the Central Cemetery in Brno. This was stated today by the Deputy Mayor Tomáš Koláčný (Pirates) to journalists. The Brno architect Ruller passed away at the age of 91 last March. His works include, for example, the Rondo hall, the Židenice ceremonial hall, the VUT sports hall, and he also participated in the design of the Janáček Theatre.
The decision to place Ruller’s remains in the honorary circle of Brno personalities was made by the councilors. "This is primarily because he is a significant architect. His final resting place will correspond to the importance of his personality not only in the context of the city of Brno but also in terms of the significance of his creative works in general,” Koláčný said. He reminded that Ruller was awarded the City of Brno Prize in 1994.
The Brno native will thus join the honorary circle, where people can find the graves of, for example, Leoš Janáček, Bohuslav Fuchs, Karel Absolon, and others. The councilors also approved the construction of a larger tombstone, with costs ranging from 200,000 to 400,000 crowns. The expenses will be covered by the city of Brno.
Ruller was a student of Bohuslav Fuchs and Bedřich Rozehnal, and he was strongly influenced by functionalism and modernism. He also participated in international competitions. He collaborated on memorials in Auschwitz and Dakar, as well as on the construction of a museum in Tripoli.
After 1989, he served as the dean of the Brno Faculty of Architecture for four years. In 2003, President Václav Klaus awarded him the Medal of Merit for his contributions to the state in the field of art. A year later, he received the award from the Association of Architects for his lifetime work. Even at an advanced age, Ruller remained active. He taught, designed, and commented on professional issues. He was engaged against the relocation of the train station in Brno.
