Prague - The Vinohrady Theatre in Prague is expected to close for one year for repairs, likely in 2020. The building and its unique movable stage will be renovated for one billion crowns. This was stated to journalists today after a city council meeting by the councillor for culture, Jan Wolf (KDU-ČSL). The reason for the reconstruction is the poor condition of the building.

The stage dates back to 1926, designed by František Křižík. It has not undergone a major reconstruction since its inception. "We have had several studies done. First, we need to create project documentation, but the lowest possible price is likely to be 300 million crowns," added the councillor. The city wants to utilize the stage repairs to also renovate the building. According to Wolf, it could cost around 700 million crowns.

The theatre will celebrate 110 years of existence this year. The Art Nouveau building in náměstí Míru was constructed between 1905 and 1907 according to the design of architect Alois Čenský. The theatre was opened on November 24, 1907, with the first performance being Jaroslav Vrchlický's Godiva. The theatre has never undergone a complete reconstruction. "Basically, everything needs to be repaired, from the restrooms to the decoration including frescoes to the façade," councillor Wolf previously stated.
