Prague - The Prague Theatre on Vinohrady is expected to close for one to two years due to reconstruction. Repairs could begin in 2020 or 2021. The reason is the poor condition of the stage, which is over 90 years old. At the same time, the facilities do not meet modern standards. The reconstruction will cost nearly one billion crowns. Jan Wolf (KDU-ČSL/Trojkoalice), the councilor for culture, said this today to ČTK. The reconstruction of the theatre has been planned since 2016.
"Every stage is specific. The same goes for the Vinohrady stage. It must be done precisely to specification, and that is a long-term project,” said Wolf. The stage, which has been in use since 1926 and was designed by František, has never been reconstructed. Costs for the new stage range from 300 to 400 million crowns.
According to Wolf, the reconstruction of the building should cost an additional 500 million. "The theatre was last reconstructed about 40 years ago and, of course, does not currently meet modern theatre styles," the councilor added, noting that the theatre is set for a complete renovation from the basements to the roof. The theatre building is a cultural monument, which is why all steps must be consulted with preservationists.
During the repairs, performances of the Theatre on Vinohrady could be relocated to other spaces to maintain the continuity of the theatre. According to Wolf, the theatre in Karlín would be a possibility.
The Theatre on Vinohrady celebrated its 110th anniversary last autumn. The Art Nouveau building in Náměstí Míru was constructed between 1905 and 1907 according to the design of architect Alois Čenský. The theatre opened on November 24, 1907, and the first performance that audience could see there was the play Godiva by Jaroslav Vrchlický.
