Olomouc - The leadership of the Olomouc city hall wants to increase the number of areas designated for residential construction in the city. They will present a proposal for a change to the zoning plan to the council members, which would cater to those interested in building plots. Mayor Martin Novotný told ČTK that, thanks to the change in the zoning plan, hundreds of new apartments could be built in the city.

"The set of changes to the zoning plan includes about thirty locations, most of which concern the adjustment of regulations so that the areas can be used for housing. Among them are both smaller areas, for example, for two family houses, as well as large locales," said the mayor.
In the list of areas whose owners are interested in changing the zoning plan in favor of housing is, according to him, for example, the site of the former brickworks on Balcárková Street or the former military area in the location on Šibeník. "These are fairly large projects. The number of new apartments that the change in the zoning plan would allow to be built certainly numbers in the hundreds," the mayor stated.
The Olomouc city hall has not built apartment buildings for several years and leaves their construction to the private sector. The construction of residential buildings in the regional city is limited precisely by the lack of plots. A handicap for Olomouc in this area is that there is high-quality agricultural land in its surroundings.
In the Olomouc Region, the number of started and completed apartments increased year-on-year last year. A total of 1862 apartments were completed, which is an increase of 5.4 percent compared to two years ago. The number of starts grew by 5.2 percent to 2280 apartments.
