Olomouc - In the future, the built-up area of the regional city of Olomouc could extend to the district of Slavonín. This is considered in a new study by the city, which also plans to introduce a tram line to these areas. The gap between Slavonín and Povlem could potentially be filled with family houses and residential buildings with a maximum height of five stories. According to Radek Dosoudil from the Olomouc municipality, new housing here could accommodate up to seven and a half thousand people. This is reported today by the Olomoucký den. "Everything is still in the stage of considerations, the zoning plan for this area has not even changed yet,” said deputy mayor Jaromír Czmero (ČSSD) to the newspaper. The area is currently classified as agricultural land, and the city would have to negotiate with the Ministry of the Environment for its removal from the land fund. “For this purpose, we have commissioned a preliminary study that addresses the placement of houses and greenery in this area," Czmero noted. The study also considers bringing in a tram line that would end at a terminus near the intersection of Jižní and Schweitzerova streets. "This is a fairly old plan, but its implementation was halted in its infancy at the beginning of the nineties,” Radek Dosoudil told the paper. He described the potential costs of the new tram line as enormous. “Perhaps it could be brought back to the table. In the new programming period of the European Union, which will begin in 2007, it is possible to obtain support of up to eighty-five percent for such projects,” Dosoudil added. According to Czmero, the city must now demonstrate that the area is indeed needed. However, according to Jarmila Krebsová from the Ministry of the Environment, not all areas designated for residential construction in Olomouc's zoning plan are currently utilized.
