Plzeň - A unique project for the extension of one of the buildings in the Plzeň Faculty Hospital complex in Lochotín awaits approval from the state. It was designed by the renowned architect of Czech origin Eva Jiřičná. The extraordinary complex made of glass and metal, referred to as "the little cloud over Plzeň," is intended for the Bone Marrow Donor Registry and the hematology-oncology department of the hospital. The project already has a zoning decision and the foundations for a building permit, as reported by ČTK. "This is a project that my colleagues and I worked on with our hearts. I hope that this little cloud will one day come to fruition," Jiřičná told ČTK, who is internationally renowned for her bold modern designs. A few years ago, former head of hematology-oncology in Plzeň, Vladimír Koza, called upon her to collaborate on the extension, who performed the first bone marrow transplant in the Czech Republic in 1991 and established the donor registry. "He was a person I respected almost the most. One night he wrote me an email asking if I would like to create a small cloud over the hospital for him. He wanted patients and their loved ones to spend time in a beautiful environment. The view from the upper floor is amazing," Jiřičná stated. According to her, the glass extension on the eighth floor of the building is meant to appear much lighter than the building itself from the 1970s. Jiřičná designed a complex that will include offices, rooms for patients and donors, laboratories, and registry offices. "There is also a restaurant and a lecture hall because Director Koza knew that medical science depends on continuous research. For him, that room where doctors can educate themselves was very important," added the architect. According to Gabriela Levorová, spokesperson for the Plzeň Faculty Hospital, approval from the Ministry of Finance is currently awaited. "Since the extension is to take place on the hospital building, which is state property, it is necessary to obtain consent from the Ministry of Finance for the transfer of a share of the part of the building to a new owner," she said. Consent has not yet been issued. With the construction, the Bone Marrow Donor Registry, which is currently in leased premises, is trying to secure its own space and also new space for the operations of the hospital's hematology-oncology department. The project is fully financed from the registry's funds.
