Nový Bor - Today, the reconstructed Míru square was opened in Nový Bor in the Česká Lípa region with a New Year's fireworks display. The celebration attracted hundreds of people to the city center. This event was the first on the square after the completion of the reconstruction, however, the city center is not completely finished. It has been partially opened so far; the town hall is negotiating preliminary use of the square. It should be completely finished by the second half of March, said Nový Bor Mayor Jaromír Dvořák (Mayors for the Liberec Region).
The town hall organized the celebration with fireworks for the fourth time on New Year's Day. "We do this so that families with children can come, so that people here in Nový Bor can meet and wish each other a Happy New Year," said the mayor. According to him, the city paid 30,000 crowns for the fireworks itself. However, Nový Bor was not the only place in the Liberec region with fireworks today. Similar programs were prepared for residents of towns like Turnov and nearby Česká Lípa by their town halls.
With its 12,000 inhabitants, Nový Bor is the fifth largest city in the Liberec region. Work on the revitalization of the historical core has been ongoing for several years. In previous phases, changes were made to the park in front of the town hall, Kalinova Street, and the area in front of the so-called Lužické domky. The reconstruction of the square in Nový Bor was the final phase of the restoration of the historical center of the city. It will cost the town 24.6 million crowns and will be about four million cheaper than originally anticipated by the designers.
According to Dvořák, the square currently lacks an artistic element, which will be installed in March. A sculpture resembling an open glass rotating mold was designed for the town by Prague architects Gabriela Králová and Lucie Chroustová. "Also, adequate historical lighting is still missing. The monopoly supplier is still manufacturing the lights that are in the other parts of the square and has not managed to deliver them on time. Therefore, the entire approval process cannot be closed yet," explained the reasons for the delays, the city mayor said. After the approval of the square, according to Dvořák, parking in the area will be fee-based. It has been free until now.
