Týn nad Vltavou

A8000 s.r.o.

The amateur theater group in Týn nad Vltavou has been performing outdoors for 100 years. The Vltavan Society has given itself a gift for this anniversary. The architectural studio A8000 has designed a renovation of the world's only rotating auditorium that belongs to an amateur theater group. The seating capacity will increase from 220 to 260 people, and actors and technicians will gain more comfortable facilities. Additionally, the stage's outer shell will be covered with light lenses. Whenever there are no performances, the theater stage will shine like a symbolic public light or lantern in the park.

The beginnings of amateur theater in Týn nad Vltavou date back to 1855, but the first outdoor theater, spanning a generous 1,500 square meters, was established here in 1921. The stage at that time consisted of villages comprising several buildings. A new era began for the troupe in 1983 when its members built a rotating auditorium in Bedřich's Gardens, on the grounds of the former castle and Celtic oppidum, in two months and with their own efforts. The original construction did not even have a building permit. However, the amateur actors gradually obtained permits not only for the construction itself but also for the renovation they are currently planning. The stage from the 1980s needs modernization due to its deteriorating technical condition; the seating solution for the audience and facilities for the actors were also inadequate. The A8000 studio has been working on the project for a long time, almost since the late 1990s. Only now, however, has the time matured, and the project is ready for implementation.

The most significant changes will be made to the seating area. By respecting the ideal sightline curve, the auditorium will be raised, offering visitors a better view of the performances. Its capacity will also be increased from 220 to 260 spectators. The artists from the Vltavan Society can look forward to more than twice the space in their dressing rooms, while technicians will enjoy comfortable access directly to the stage. Storage spaces for equipment, scenery, and costumes will also be significantly enlarged. It will also be possible for people with reduced mobility to watch the performances. Unlike the only other rotating auditorium in Český Krumlov, this one will preserve benches instead of traditional theater seats. This way, the theater will maintain a certain unique character, a human, homely scale, and tradition. Bedřich's Gardens is a popular local park and meeting place. In addition to theater performances, concerts and summer cinema are held here. The architects have therefore decided to emphasize the significance of the rotating auditorium and acknowledge its importance in the area. The result is an atypical outer shell for the stage made of programmable LED lights, which can be controlled as needed. Passersby could even play with the lights through an application. When there are no performances, the theater will shine like a symbolic interactive lantern in the park.

“We have never designed a stone theater in the studio before. Of course, we have extensive experience with various cultural projects such as the cultural epicenter Bazilika, Forum Karlín, or the renovation of the hall of the South Bohemian Philharmonic, but the small rotating auditorium has been a pleasant challenge for us. At the beginning of the project, I focused on analyzing the available data at the Theater Institute, I went to see Český Krumlov, but I also observed all possible rotating stages, including those in parking garages, to acquire the technical principles as much as possible. I would say that the most important thing was to experience theater in all its glory firsthand. I therefore visited several performances and simply absorbed the atmosphere. It was extremely inspiring for further work,” describes architect Petr Jakšík from A8000 studio.

The design sensitively combines a human approach and warmth from various types of wood with perfect execution and modern technologies. The implementation could begin as early as next year.
