Brno - The title of the best restored monument in South Moravia last year, along with a reward of 150,000 crowns from the South Moravian Region, was awarded to Slup in the Znojmo region for the restoration of the dome of the local church of the Name of the Virgin Mary. The church won in the large buildings category and also received the most votes from a total of 30 monuments nominated for the award.
The competition has been organized by the South Moravian Region for the fourth year with the aim of helping in the restoration of monuments in southern Moravia. The winner was decided by public voting. 9,000 people participated, with the Slup church receiving 2,323 votes, said today's award ceremony speaker, Deputy Governor Václav Božek (ČSSD).
In the large buildings category, second place was also awarded, with a prize of 50,000 crowns, to Hluboké Mašůvky from the Znojmo region for the repair of the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary.
In the category of movable monuments, the first place was awarded to the restored organ in the church in Vranov nad Dyjí in the Znojmo region, which is the largest Renaissance Catholic temple in Moravia and has been restored in recent years at a cost of many millions of crowns. The Vranov parish thus received a prize of 50,000 crowns. The same amount was awarded to Velké Pavlovice in the Břeclav region for the repair of the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua, which has become an adornment of the town after its restoration.
The repairs of the Slup church, which is the main winner of the competition, were quite extensive. They included the restoration of the decaying church dome. It was decided after a three-meter cross weighing 150 kilograms became loose from its top. It was then discovered that its entire structure needed a complete overhaul.
Last year's winner of the competition was the historical Swiss chalet near Adamov in the Blansko region. It was built in 1850 and is now used as an ecological center by the organization Brontosaurus. The building is unique in its architecture. It was originally built as a mineral spa. The money garnered from the competition will be used for the restoration and adaptation of the local hay barn, which will eventually become an ecological classroom.
