In southern Moravia, fewer new homes were built last year than in 2019

Brno - Last year, 4454 new apartments were completed in southern Moravia, which is 265 fewer than the previous year. More than half of the completed buildings were in Brno and the Brno region. Conversely, there was a slight increase in the number of apartments and houses that started construction in the region. Compared to the previous year, their number increased by 93 to 4942. This is based on data published today by the Brno office of the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ).


The total number of started residential buildings ranks southern Moravia second among regions, behind the Central Bohemian Region. In nine out of 14 regions in the Czech Republic, statisticians recorded a decline in the number of started residential buildings. Nationwide, their number decreased by 8.9 percent year-on-year to 35,253.

Of the seven districts in the South Moravian Region, Brno and the Brno region contributed the most to the number of started apartments and houses, accounting for a quarter of all initiated constructions, and Brno, where 20.9 percent of the houses and apartments in the region began construction. The largest portion of the buildings initiated last year consisted of family houses, with a total of 2588. Construction of apartments in apartment buildings started with 1258.

In terms of completed residential buildings, last year the South Moravian Region ranked third in interregional comparison, after the Central Bohemian Region and Prague. However, the number of completed apartments and houses decreased in 12 regions, the most in Prague, by nearly 24 percent. Throughout the Czech Republic, the number of completed residential buildings decreased by 5.4 percent to 34,433.

In comparing individual districts in southern Moravia, more than half of all apartments were completed in Brno, totaling 1144 apartments, and in the Brno region, where builders completed 1101 apartments. Even so, in Brno and the Brno region, the number of completed buildings also declined, with an increase only noted in Znojmo, Blansko, and Břeclav.
