Brno - People in South Moravia have started building attic extensions in family houses, and they are now constructing the most in the country. Real estate agents are observing an increase in interest, and the trend is also indicated by the latest figures from the Czech Statistical Office regarding residential construction. Building in the attic is cheaper than a standalone house and has other advantages, experts agree. In the South Moravian Region, 2,550 apartments were completed from January to September, with every tenth being an attic extension in a family house. "Our agents are noticing an increase in interest in attic extensions," said Radana Krejčiříková from RealSpektrum. According to her, extensions often offer not only rooms but also attractive designs. It is the cheapest option to obtain a new apartment, claims Bohumír Hron from the construction company Attack Art. In Brno, building an apartment in the attic of a family house costs the same as an apartment in a panel building. For a 3+1 apartment in an estate, the interested party will pay about 1.2 million, while a similarly sized extension costs between 1.2 million and 1.5 million. It depends on the materials used and the condition of the house. An attic apartment is a dry construction, so work can also be done on it in winter. Additionally, there is no need to take technological breaks, Hron continues. A disadvantage may be a shared entrance, especially when parents with adult children often live in the house with the extension. According to sociologist Ivo Možný, shared yet separate living arrangements are healthy. "It is an optimal arrangement. It is important that every housewife has her own kitchen, each apartment has its own refrigerator, and the apartment can be locked," he believes. Such an arrangement is advantageous for both children and parents, Možný points out, for example, regarding babysitting grandchildren or helping parents in old age. However, it is essential to respect the other’s autonomy while also defending one’s own.
