6:40 PM Book launch
7:00 PM Performance by Anna B. Háblová + composer Slavomír Hořínka

Anna Beata Háblová's book discusses shopping centers, their architectural development, and the role they play in the life of contemporary society and within the urban structure of the city. Knowledgeable and informed commentary is combined here with a very readable form, complemented by witty illustrations. Despite the lightness of the text, the publication Cities of Walls clearly points to the seriousness of the problem that shopping centers have introduced into the urban organism and urban life. A shopping center is not just one of many building types, but a phenomenon from which many essential features of contemporary civilization can be uncovered. The author's critique of shopping centers is not one-sided—she understands that shopping centers are and will remain a part of our urban environment and that we need to seek forms that allow them to be conceived more harmoniously with the surrounding urban fabric.
It is published in cooperation with the Institute of Planning and Development of the City of Prague. The book will be available for purchase on-site.
