Liberec - The new field of Environmental Design will be offered from the new academic year by the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Liberec. It is a four-year bachelor's program that is not currently offered by any other architecture faculty in the country. The program fills a gap that has emerged in recent years between architecture and design. Similar programs exist in universities in the Netherlands and France and are being prepared in Austria, said the dean of the Liberec faculty, Bořek Šípek, to reporters today. He added that the faculty is also preparing to accredit a follow-up master's program. Environmental Design connects architecture and fine arts. "In the past, architects did everything, even in the 1920s, they designed everything from the house to the owner's slippers," noted Šípek. However, in recent years, architects have been paying less attention to details and art, and most would have trouble designing even a window handle, according to Šípek. These details are handled by designers. "Traditional industrial design, however, is not tied to a location, whereas environmental design is always determined by its surroundings," stated Šípek. The Faculty of Architecture is the second youngest faculty of the Technical University of Liberec. It was established in 1994. From the beginning, it has promoted its own model of contemporary architecture school with a relatively small number of students. It offers three bachelor's programs - Architecture and Urbanism, Fine Arts, and Environmental Design. While most bachelor's programs at the Liberec university are three years, these are one year longer. "Three-year studies do not qualify for entry into the architects' chamber," explained Šípek. According to him, a four-year study also gives more space to produce educated individuals capable of working independently in the field. Currently, there are 200 students studying at the faculty.
