Liberec - Liberec will start preparing the documents for the reconstruction of the seven-story Uran building, which houses the municipal police and some departments of the city hall. It urgently needs repair. No other building where city officials work is in worse technical condition. The expectation is that the reconstruction could start in 2019, said Deputy Mayor Jan Korytář (Change for Liberec) to reporters today. The city estimates the repair costs between 27 and 80 million crowns, depending on the chosen option.

The building with a steel frame has stood at the bus station on 1st May Boulevard since 1969. The city has owned it since 2005, and apart from the reconstruction of the ground floor in 2009, Uran has not undergone any significant renovation. The city hall had planned it earlier, but the project documentation created six years ago cannot be used. It has expired validity, and at that time, no structural engineering survey was conducted. According to Mayor Tibor Batthyány (former ANO), it is necessary to perform it.

"In order to have relevant materials for the preparation of new project documentation, we need to know exactly the condition of the building,"
he said. It is known that it is in poor condition, according to him. The main danger to its surroundings is the outer façade made of so-called boletice panels. "There is protective scaffolding around the building to prevent anything from falling on someone's head on the street," the mayor stated. He also considers the facilities for officials and visitors inadequate. Over 120 people work in Uran, and part of the transport agenda and the social welfare department is located there.

The city council selected the company that will conduct the structural engineering survey on Tuesday. "It is necessary to check especially the condition and load-bearing capacity of the supporting structures, the condition of the outer façade, where there is a risk of asbestos presence, the condition of insulation, and the internal installations," said Korytář. The city will pay nearly 300,000 crowns for the structural engineering survey. The professional company is expected to deliver the results to the city within ten weeks of commencing the survey.
