Prague - In connection with the investigation into the repair of Charles Bridge, the police have charged Jan Kněžínka, the Director of the Heritage Department of the Prague City Hall. He is suspected of the crime of negligence in the performance of a public official’s duties. CTK was informed of this by police spokesman Tomáš Hulan, stating that no one else has been charged so far. Opponents of the method of repairing Charles Bridge from the Association for the Protection and Development of Cultural Heritage filed a criminal complaint against an unknown perpetrator. They were bothered that a construction-historical survey had allegedly not been carried out before the repairs began and that archaeologists were not informed. They considered the City of Prague as the owner of the bridge, the City Hall as the heritage care authority, and the National Heritage Institute as the responsible parties. The police charged Kněžínka in February. In relation to the reconstruction of the bridge, the Plzeň Region today announced that it imposed a fine of 3.25 million CZK on the Prague City Hall for degrading the heritage value of Charles Bridge during its reconstruction. The City Hall is likely to appeal against the fine.
