Hradec Králové - Heritage conservationists, the Hradec Králové region, and municipalities want to look for ways to save the unique Braun's Bethlehem in Nový Les near Kuks in the Trutnov region. This stems from a draft memorandum approved today by the Hradec Králové region councilors. The statues and reliefs sculpted into sandstone rocks in the 18th century by the sculptor Matyáš Bernard Braun have been damaged by vandals and weather conditions.

The memorandum should be signed by representatives of the National Heritage Institute, the Hradec Králové region, Dvůr Králové nad Labem, municipalities, and the company Revitalizace Kuks. The date for the signing has not yet been determined. "The goal of the memorandum is to establish and coordinate cooperation in preserving the unique set of Braun's Bethlehem. It is necessary to create optimal conditions to prevent further degradation of this collection," said regional councilor Pavel Hečko (ČSSD) to ČTK today.

The Bethlehem, owned by heritage conservationists, is located near the Hospital Kuks complex, which was recently renovated and currently attracts many tourists. "Given the number of tourists, it is necessary to create sufficient facilities around the Bethlehem and, for example, an information system," said Hečko.

Braun's Bethlehem was categorized as a National Cultural Monument in 2001, and discussions about its restoration have been ongoing for several years. In recent years, restorers from the University of Pardubice have been working on the site, having cleaned the main relief of moss and dirt, for example.

The regional company Revitalizace Kuks plans a project costing 30 million crowns, which includes the establishment of an information center or the construction of a new tour route. According to the original plans, the first works could begin in 2018 and are expected to last for two years.
