Ústí nad Labem - Various sculptures, plastic arts, and other artworks commemorating the discoveries of Jan Evangelista Purkyně will adorn the outdoor spaces of the newly being constructed campus of the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně (UJEP) in Ústí nad Labem. University spokesperson Jana Šiková told ČTK today that the school plans to utilize 1.5 million crowns for the artworks, which it received from the city. According to Šiková, the school will prepare a list of Purkyně’s scientific discoveries for the student artists. They will be able to select from it and apply for a competition, in which a commission will choose the best designs. "We do not want to limit the artists in what they choose, what materials they use, and what they create. The condition is that the artwork can be placed outdoors and withstand the weather," Šiková stated. UJEP intends to present the created works to the public on December 17, on the day of the scientist's birthday. If possible, they will be placed in the outdoor areas of the campus. Alternatively, the university will store them and place them on site when the park is completed. Along with the artworks, the school will also publish an informational brochure that will commemorate the scientist's contributions. Construction of the campus for 10,500 students and more than 1,000 employees and academic staff began five years ago, growing at the site of the former hospital. Some buildings are already completed, while the school needs funds for others. In April this year, the government decided to grant the school 420 million crowns. UJEP wants to obtain additional funds from European funds. Šiková told ČTK today that the school has already sent two requests for grants and is preparing several more.
