Jihlava - The city hall of Jihlava is preparing to hold an architectural competition next year for the revitalization of the central Masaryk Square. Architects should propose, among other things, better traffic solutions in the historical center of Jihlava. The criticized buildings of the Prior shopping center should not be included in the proposals, as they are private property. This was stated today by Deputy Mayor Radek Popelka (ANO) to reporters.

The councilors acknowledged the preparation of the architectural competition, which should be announced in the spring. They also discussed the composition of the selection committee and the choice of experts who should assist with the competition assignment. "So that the architects have sufficient materials that will, on the one hand, tell them what we expect from them, and on the other hand, not restrict their creative expression too much," said Mayor Rudolf Chloupek (ČSSD).

The councilors also spoke about whether the city should commission a study on possible changes to the Prior. According to Popelka, they concluded that the city cannot invest in the study, as it would likely cost hundreds of thousands of crowns.

Masaryk Square is one of the largest squares in the Czech Republic. The massive construction of the Prior department store occurred as a result of a political decision in the early 1980s. It replaced a historically valuable group of Renaissance houses. Discussions about possible changes or the demolition of Prior have been ongoing in the city for years. "In my opinion, it is better for the owner to take care of their property," Popelka said. He believes that the definitive end of the city's efforts to buy or demolish Prior could open the way for private capital adjustments.

"It is a sore on the square that we probably cannot remove because the costs would be enormous,"
Chloupek stated. According to him, the square has more functions. The linden trees by the plague column are aging, the food stalls and parking are criticized, and traffic solutions are needed; cars often clog the lower part of the square.
