Pardubice - Builders today in Pardubice installed concrete pillars all day for a wooden footbridge that will cross the Chrudimka River. Two larch pieces weighing a total of 40 tons were joined by two large cranes, representatives of the construction companies told ČTK.
"Each half of the footbridge weighs 20 tons. The footbridge will have a completely wooden surface, the reinforcements are steel. One crane weighs 120 tons, we need sufficiently strong machines," said project manager Petr Skřivánek from the company Gargenline.
In previous weeks, workers built concrete pillars on the banks. The builders assembled both pieces of the footbridge in advance, which is not a commonly used procedure. They secured both halves to the foundation structure and connected the bridge in the middle.
"There are seven-centimeter spikes that must fit together like a children's puzzle. We promised Mr. architect that there would be no more than an eight-millimeter difference," said builder Robert Spálenský.
After the installation of the footbridge, its surface treatment will last until the middle of the week. Over time, the larch wood will acquire a reddish patina. The new footbridge will open to pedestrians only after the completion of the revitalization of the entire park Na Špici, which means December 1. The footbridge is quite arched and will be difficult for wheelchair users without assistance.
"An exception has been granted for wheelchair users, the bridge near the mills will be modified for their needs, and they will go around. Cycling will also be prohibited, there will be a sign saying Cyclist, dismount from your bike," Skřivánek said.
The revitalization of the Na Špici park began in April, and the city received European grants for it. It will cost 33 million crowns. Workers are currently building a pavilion by the Čičák pond and completing the planting of greenery. The park is expected to retain its natural character even after the renovations. Tree felling was minimal.
