Hradec Králové - The town hall in Hradec Králové wants to build a new bridge for cyclists across the Orlice River. The costs are estimated to be more than 20 million crowns, and if everything goes smoothly, the bridge could be constructed within two years. The bridge is expected to be an important part of the main network of cycling paths in the city of one hundred thousand inhabitants. This was stated today by the deputy mayor Josef Malíř.

The bridge will span the Orlice between the ice rink and the buildings of the university in Hradec. Currently, cyclists have to use a nearby narrow bridge that is heavily trafficked. The study for the bridge is to be prepared for the city by the renowned Czech architect Mirko Baum, who is currently working in Germany.
According to Malíř, the city wants to prepare the project for the bridge over the Orlice so that it does not meet the same fate as the footbridge over the Elbe near the Aldis Congress Center. Although the city has built an access ramp to the footbridge on one bank near Aldis, it has not constructed it due to the opposition from civic associations. Activists were unhappy that a large oak tree would have to be cut down for the footbridge.
In Hradec Králové, which is located in flat terrain, there are around 40 kilometers of cycling paths, the most in the region. The town hall invests millions of crowns annually in the construction of paths. New paths are primarily being added in the outskirts of the city.
