Brno - The historic Chlumeckých Palace in the center of Brno is getting a new look. Most of the façade is already finished. Builders are moving into the interior spaces of the building, where the historical editorial office of Lidové noviny was located in the past. The investment will amount to over one hundred million crowns, said Miroslav Vymazal, owner of Magnum, the company that owns the palace, to ČTK. "We would like to release the construction site on České Street as soon as possible. Soon, the ground floor windows will be created. We want to have the exterior shell finished first," Vymazal stated. The ground floor and the first floor will have shops, while the upper floors will house offices and apartments. The construction company plans to open the commercial part of the building in April 2014. The reconstruction of the building began last year. The extensive structure, which has stood in the center of Brno since the mid-19th century, was in a critical condition. "The repair came at the last possible moment; the building was statically compromised. If left for another year or two, the walls would have been at risk of collapsing. They were already cracked because water was leaking into the roof," Vymazal stated. Magnum focuses on the renovation of historic buildings in city centers. In Brno, for example, it renovated a building on České Street that used to house the bistro Sputnik, as well as a historic building at Masarykova Street 11. The Chlumeckých Palace is a protected monument. It was built in the 1850s on the site of four original medieval burgher houses. Tailors, bakers, butchers, and soap makers lived there, as well as wealthy brickworks or brewery owners, and some noble families. In 1852, the Trade and Industrial Chamber moved into the new premises. At the end of the 19th century, the entire editorial team of Lidové noviny relocated there. Since 1910, Czech patriots have been meeting in the well-known Brichta café on the ground floor.
