Prague - The Church of St. Wenceslas in Svatopluk Čech Square in Vršovice will be illuminated starting in September. The municipal district of Prague 10 expects that the installation of lighting for this significant functionalist monument will cost 1.5 million crowns. Of this, Prague 10 will pay 600,000 crowns, while the rest will be covered by the company Eltodo-Citelum, which operates public lighting in the capital, said Jan Charvát, the spokesperson for the municipal district, today to ČTK.

"This is the first monument of citywide significance that will be illuminated in our municipal district," Charvát said. The church is expected to be lit for the first time on the occasion of the celebration of St. Wenceslas Day on September 28. Tests were already conducted at the site at the end of March. The lighting equipment will be owned by Eltodo-Citelum, which will cover the costs of operation and maintenance of the equipment.
"We are long-term advocates for increasing the attractiveness of significant public spaces and one of the options is festive lighting for selected listed buildings," said the mayor of Prague 10, Vladislav Lipovský (ODS).
The church was built between 1929 and 1930 on the site of a former cemetery according to the design of architect Josef Gočár. It is considered one of the most significant functionalist buildings in the Czech Republic.
