The International Festival of Film and Architecture, which this year will visit Czech and Slovak cities for the eleventh time, is announcing an open call for filmmakers with themes of architecture or urbanism. Film and Architecture will take place from September 30 to October 4, 2022, as part of the celebrations for International Architecture Day. Please send links to Vimeo or another form of screener, a short annotation, and a brief bio of the author of the film to: program@filmarchitektura.cz by May 31, 2022. This call is announced for the fourth time, with each year significantly increasing the number of interesting projects that the festival's dramaturgical team evaluates and, if aligned with the themes of the given year, also includes in the program. Films can be feature-length, medium-length, or short, but they must be related to the theme of architecture. “Although the focus of our festival on the themes of architecture and urbanism may seem quite specific, it also encompasses questions of life in cities and how their form and functioning directly and indirectly affect their inhabitants in everyday life. We are therefore pleased that filmmakers themselves feel this extension more than they did before. The open call is primarily an opportunity for us to access lesser-known films and also to give emerging filmmakers the chance to reach a larger audience.” explains the call from the festival curator Karolína Vacková. Last year, a number of films by Czech and foreign creators were submitted to the open call, three of which were included in the program – a feature-length documentary by French director Marie-Noelle Battaglia titled Over the Walls, which opened the theme of the boundary between private and public space in the French city of Marseille, the poetic film Three Patios for the Sun about the Casa Trevo villa by the architectural duo Elsa Caetaneo and Olivier Ottevaere, and the ambitious film by Tereza Štěpánová Route mapping eight railway buildings by Czech architect Josef Danda. Film and Architecture also initiates the creation of films, with three documentaries produced last year on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the founder of Czech architectural modernity, Jan Kotěra, highlighting the architect's realizations. Films from Tomáš Luňák, Kateřina Fojtíková, and Greta Stocklass can be found on the festival's YouTube channel. In addition to screenings, the festival features discussions with directors and experts, as well as dance performances. Film and Architecture takes place in parallel with the Architecture Day festival, offering hundreds of freely accessible events in dozens of cities and towns across the Czech Republic and Slovakia at the beginning of October. It is organized by the Kruh Association, drawing on two decades of experience in the field and long-term cooperation with architects, associations, and institutions in all regions.
