INSPIRATION FROM ADAM GEBRIAN

The Pruitt-Igoe Myth + Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio
Two films selected by Adam Gebrian: One of the most famous and frequently cited demolitions of the 20th century. A recently created residential neighborhood, built with public funds, was destroyed in the mid-1970s. What went wrong? In the fundamental urban-architectural composition? That's not the only topic in the film The Pruitt-Igoe Myth. "I often come across the statement 'architects built...', to which I usually respond with a denial, saying 'they didn't build, at most they didn't design', and that's a big difference. The vast majority of architects around the world build nothing. They design. They draw and model on the computer and conduct artistic supervision on construction sites. However, there are exceptions, and one of them, The Rural Studio, is exactly what this film is about," says Adam Gebrian about the film Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio.
Mon 1. 10. 18:00, City Library Cinema in Prague Cathedrals of Culture (3D) Six important cultural buildings through the eyes of six important film directors in a 3D projection. "For all architecture fans, it will surely be great to see the Berlin Philharmonic building through Wim Wenders' eyes. This building is also easily accessible for each of us, which I truly recommend. Personally, I am most looking forward to the Salk Institute in California, directed by Robert Redford. It is one of those buildings where I felt that the entire complex was likely the work of some extraterrestrial civilization and we are just using it. At the time of filming, the complex had already experienced half a century of existence. I think it’s worth noting how perfect its condition is," says Adam Gebrian.
Wed 3. 10., Svetozor Cinema Why We Cycle It can be said with exaggeration that the Netherlands has many more bicycles than inhabitants. And it seems that the Dutch themselves don’t pay much attention to cycling culture. Cycling is as natural to them as breathing. The film Why We Cycle invites regular cyclists, psychologists, sociologists, architects, and urban planners to discuss this phenomenon. Their insights reveal some seemingly hidden effects of cycling on residents, society, and the organization of cities. After the film, there will be a debate with transport urbanist specializing in cycling, Tomáš Cachem.
We also warmly recommend the film BLOKI, which is a sociological probe focusing on the construction of giant residential complexes that arose under the strict regulations of the communist government and became home to thousands of families. Architecture and music lovers will appreciate the films THE OPERA HOUSE and MORIYAMA-SAN.
