Plzeň - The Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň has a new research and educational complex, which was approved for use in June in the northern part of the UWB campus in Borská pole. This summer, all offices, classrooms, and laboratories of the faculty will move into it. The NTIS Research Center - New Technologies for the Information Society and the Center for Technical and Natural Science Education and Research (CTPVV) will be officially opened on September 19, ahead of the start of the new academic year. This was announced today by the university spokesperson Kamila Kolářová.
"From the 2014/2015 academic year, the smaller wing of the new building (CTPVV) will be used by students and teachers, while the larger wing (NTIS) will serve more than 270 top scientists and researchers," she stated. Scientists and researchers will start full operations in the offices and laboratories from January 2015 when all equipment and technologies are in place.
According to the director of the center, Pavel Novák, modernly equipped conference rooms with a total capacity of up to 400 people will also be available in the new building for students and the public.
The European Center of Excellence NTIS was established with financial support from the Operational Program Research and Development for Innovations. Scientists and researchers focusing on cybernetics, modern information and communication technologies, mechanics experts, physicists who can create special materials from common materials through thin-film coating with plasma technologies, mathematicians, and geomaticians will work there.
The construction of the complex, which includes parking for 155 cars, is one of the largest investment projects of the university. The construction costs are 525 million crowns excluding VAT. The rector of UWB, Ilona Mauritzová, previously stated that the center is an opportunity for the university to rank among the European research and development elite.
The Faculty of Applied Sciences was established in 1990, still as part of the University of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering in Plzeň. In 1991, it was one of the founding faculties of UWB. Currently, it has around 1300 students.
