Brno - The Dobrovského tunnels and the large city ring road in Brno will open this September after lengthy complications. Transport Minister Pavel Dobeš promised this during a site visit today. "The Dobrovského tunnels will be opened in September, and the Svitavy radial will follow," confirmed Dobeš. The construction of the tunnels, also known as the Královopolské, was accompanied by a number of complications, as activists have been litigating for years over the impact on the surrounding area, noise, and the lives of residents near the construction site. Last autumn, the activists reached an agreement with the Directorate of Roads and Highways, and construction is now continuing. The tunnel construction was also threatened last autumn by reports from the Ministry of Transport, which indicated that they would not be completed next year, but rather in 2014. The construction was reportedly jeopardized by a lack of funds from the state budget for the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure (SFDI). However, at the end of September, the ministry confirmed that the newly approved SFDI budget will now allocate 1.143 billion crowns for the completion of the Dobrovského tunnels by the end of this summer. Minister Dobeš was also interested during his visit to Brno in the so-called Žabovřeská radial. According to Dobeš, the ministry supports the construction and has already allocated 68 million crowns for land acquisition. Another 42 million crowns is intended for preparing the construction around Tomkovo Square in Brno. The minister's visit also inquired about rail transport, such as the modernization of the line from Brno to Přerov between 2014 and 2020. According to the Governor of the South Moravian Region, Michal Hašek, the regional government requested the minister to advocate for Brno and Břeclav as significant railway hubs in the European Union. In addition to Brno, the minister and his delegation will also visit Znojmo in the South Moravian Region, where they will discuss, among other things, the city ring road and the modernization of the railway to Brno.
