PROSTĚJOV - The Prostějov city hall wants to find out how schoolchildren view one of the most significant monuments in town, the National House. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the building, an art competition titled "The Centennial National House in Painting, Drawing, Graphics, or Ceramics" has been announced. Interested parties can submit their works starting now, with a deadline in June of next year. "The aim of the competition is to depict and illustrate the National House as an Art Nouveau monument, but also as a center of cultural and social life. The best works will be exhibited in the National House and published in the city's calendar for the year 2007," said the city hall spokeswoman Jana Gáborová to ČTK. The competition is organized in four categories. It is open to preschool children, students from both levels of elementary schools, gymnasium students, and others. They can submit their works at the advance ticket sales center of the Municipal Theatre in Prostějov or at the city hall. According to Gáborová, this is not the first art competition held in Prostějov. Last year, children artistically represented the town hall building, which celebrated its 90th anniversary. The best works appeared in the city’s promotional materials. The National House is a unique Art Nouveau monument of European significance. It is one of the prominent landmarks of the city and serves as its main cultural and social center. It was built between 1905 and 1907 according to the design of a leading figure of Czech Art Nouveau, Jan Kotěra.
