Interior of the apartment of Oskar Semler's family (1931–1934) Klatovská 110, Plzeň
The interior and exhibition are accessible from today, November 12, 2015, twice a week (Thursday and Saturday) in groups of no more than 10 participants; reservation is required.
A unique example among the architectural monuments of the 20th century in the Czech Republic is the apartment of Oskar Semler's family, co-owner of a company producing wire goods, primarily gramophone needles under the Sem brand. Although Adolf Loos likely only participated in establishing the basic spatial concept (the detailed solution was designed by his student Heinrich Kulka), the interior can be considered a certain peak of Loos's work in Plzeň. It is the only multi-storey apartment that features a continuous connection of spaces of different heights, thus embodying the so-called Raumplan. The interior, which has six main levels, strongly resembles the Prague Müller Villa, which preceded its creation. Unlike it, however, it is built into an older house.
From today, the first part of the Semler Residence is accessible, which is part of the collection of so-called Loos Interiors in Plzeň and in the future will house the Center for Research of Architecture in the Plzeň Region. The newly opened interior, managed by the West Bohemian Gallery in Plzeň, is part of the "Adolf Loos Plzeň" collection and marks the opening of the third guided tour route for the public, operated by the organization Plzeň-TURISMUS.
