Brno - The planned construction of a concert hall for Brno, which has been called for by the Brno Philharmonic for about 100 years, has moved a step forward. City councilors approved the announcement of a tender for the author of the territorial documentation this week. The selected firm should process it within six months, then the city will apply for a land use decision. This land use decision is essential for the realization of the project. Without it, it is not possible to apply for European subsidies, said the mayor's deputy Daniel Rychnovský to ČTK. The financing of the Janáček Cultural Center is the weakest link in the project. The construction of the center is expected to cost 1.2 billion crowns, of which one-third will go towards building underground garages, which should be financed by a private investor. However, the city must find the rest of the funds. The city budget has long planned for 200 million crowns, and the region could contribute the same amount according to Brno officials. However, additional funds are still missing. Rychnovský hopes for help from the European Union. Next week he will travel to Brussels to discuss the matter, where he has a meeting with Slovak Eurocommissioner Ján Figeľ. Representatives of the Brno city council will also try to secure some funding from the state. The construction of the Janáček Cultural Center has been discussed in Brno for years. Due to its financial demands, the leadership of Brno postponed the project in the past. Rychnovský, who has been in office for three-quarters of a year, however, considers the construction to be one of his main tasks. The city council wants to build the Janáček Cultural Center in the center of Brno next to the Besední dům. Currently, there is a parking lot on the site. The new venue is intended to be the home for the Brno Philharmonic and the opera and ballet of the National Theatre Brno. Currently, the orchestra does not have suitable concert spaces. "We actually have no idea how our philharmonic sounds; we would have to go to some quality hall and listen to it there," said Alena Štěpánková Veselá, the chairwoman of the Brno Society of Friends of Music, earlier.
