Chrudim – Chrudim today ceremoniously opened a new branch of the City Library on Topolská Street. It replaced an old and inadequate building on the edge of the nearby housing estate Stromovka. The modern building was designed by architect Marek Janatka, who served as the city architect of Chrudim, said the relaxed councilor Aleš Nunvář to ČTK.
"It is a modern single-story building with a green roof and nature-friendly wooden cladding; I would personally describe it as Scandinavian in style and simple in design, but using the latest technologies,” stated Nunvář. The library will also serve as a community space for discussions or screenings, as well as a polling station.
The new building was created in a gap between the Stormovka Bowling bar and a stationery shop. Despite this, some local residents opposed it; several public hearings on the project were held, and they were convinced only by the city's promise to create 12 parking spaces behind the building by the end of this year. The total construction costs reached 15 million crowns, of which 85 percent was obtained from a grant.
The library branch is a new building after many years that the town hall built. Other investments have mostly gone to renovations and adjustments of buildings or repairs of roads and sidewalks. The original library building on Topolská Street was created during the construction of the housing estate as a temporary prefabricated structure for accommodating workers.
There is significant interest in library services in the area, with seniors making extensive use of its services. Its attendance is higher than, for example, the libraries in nearby Slatiňany.
