Students from five architecture schools will connect to explore the Czech Republic and propose specific solutions and visions for it. The joint project of the Delft University of Technology, the ARCHIP school, the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague, the Brno University of Technology, and the Technical University in Liberec was initiated by Dutch architect Winy Maas, co-founder of the MVRDV studio and visiting professor at the FA ČVUT.
Reforestation, national parks, industrial production, transportation infrastructure, housing, demographics, population density, ecology, sociology, and economics are the topics that the students will focus on, using their collaboration for international comparisons as well. They will operate in the fields of not only architecture but also landscape and urban planning.
The pedagogical approach, which relies on relevant data while still aiming for bold ideas and visions, is typical of the work of the think tank The Why Factory (t?f), which has been addressing similar challenges at the Delft University of Technology under Winy Maas’s leadership for several years.
An example includes the theme and subsequent publication We Want World Wonders, where students propose new wonders of the world. Another project, City Shocks, presented critical events, especially as a result of climate change, that cities can expect and how they can respond to them. That such visionary thinking is not purposeless is shown by a student project from 2012 that addressed a viral pandemic affecting planet Earth.
The collaboration of the five architecture schools will culminate in an exhibition at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague. The opening will take place on May 31, 2023. The presentation will include a catalog, a short film, and a presentation to representatives of the Czech political representation in October of this year.
