Česká Lípa - Česká Lípa will not build a new theater. The councilors decided to renovate the old one instead. The city had planned the construction of a new center for art and culture, with costs expected to be around 300 to 400 million Czech crowns. However, the town hall failed to secure funding for the project and only has about 100 million crowns in its own investment fund. Therefore, the councilors opted for a cheaper renovation of the existing Jiráskové Theater, which is estimated to cost around 110 million crowns, said today the spokesperson for the Česká Lípa town hall, Kateřina Amrichová.

The councilors have thus returned to the original intention of renovating the old theater, which they dismissed nine years ago. They were concerned back then that even after renovation, the former gym would not meet the demands of a modern theater. The old building has inadequate air conditioning and poor structural integrity. Moreover, during the theater renovation, the forty-thousand inhabitants of the city will be without a theater hall. "An alternative is, however, a multipurpose hall in the Crystal cultural house," noted Amrichová.
The city has now commissioned a new revitalization study, which should address essential deficiencies, especially in the entrance area, stage, and social facilities. "The study divides the theater into three operational units - the building on Panská Street, the hall with the stage, and the entrance facility. Besides the overall renovation of the building, it mainly focuses on improving the social facilities for theater staff and performers, and a rehearsal space will also be added," said Amrichová. Among other things, balconies will be removed from the hall, allowing for the installation of tiered seating for 330 spectators.
According to Amrichová, the biggest changes are expected in the entrance area, where an extension with a cloakroom and social facilities will be created, and there will be space for a café on the upper floor. "A part of the hall on the second floor can be separated by mobile walls and can serve for exhibitions, lectures, or social events as an independent multipurpose hall," added Amrichová. As part of the theater revitalization, the surroundings will also be improved - sidewalks, paved areas, public lighting for the entrance areas, and adjacent greenery.
"A competition for the development of project documentation will be announced soon," said Amrichová. Only then can the town hall look for a contractor. The city has about one hundred million crowns prepared in the investment fund. Česká Lípa operates with a budget of over 700 million crowns. The city is repaying a loan of 230 million crowns, which it took last year for the renovation of the sports complex, and another 190 million represents a loan from the Housing Cooperative Lada, which the town hall has taken over repayment for. "There is definitely no consideration yet for going into debt because of the theater repairs," the spokesperson added.
