Bruntál - The main square of Bruntál could once again be adorned with a fountain after nearly 70 years. The town hall needs 2.6 million crowns to build the water feature. So far, it has not found the money in its budget, which is why it wants to obtain a ninety percent grant from the European Union by 2013. The fountain is intended to symbolize the river flowing from the nearby Jeseníky mountains. Jiří Ondrášek, the spokesperson for Bruntál, stated this to ČTK.
The designs for the new fountain for Míru Square were developed by the Ostrava studio OSA projekt. The winning variant, with the working title River, was recommended to the city by architect Milan Dvořák, who is the author of the reconstruction of the entire square. The motif of the fountain is a flowing mountain river that creates a water surface with a rotating globe. Architects were supposed to base their design of the water feature on the concept of Bruntál as a "city between mountains and water," and also take into account the renovated fountain at the nearby Zámecké náměstí.
This week, Bruntál’s councilors approved the fountain proposal and also agreed to have the town hall prepare an application for a grant from the Regional Operational Program Moravskoslezsko 2007 - 2013. However, the spokesperson for the city could not estimate when the new fountain might appear in the square.
A wooden fountain stood in the main Bruntál square as early as the 19th century. In 1907, the then mayor had it replaced with a marble fountain that adorned the square until 1939. During the war, it was dismantled, and the square has been without a water feature since then.
