Brno - Brno is starting the construction of its first park-and-ride parking lot, where drivers will be able to leave their cars and continue into the city via public transport. It will be located near the Brno Central Cemetery, and the construction will cost almost nine million crowns, said Pavel Žára, spokesperson for the Brno city hall, to ČTK today. The aim is to reduce the number of cars in the city. The parking facility is expected to be completed in October this year. The so-called Park and Ride parking lot is a form of combined transport linking individual car traffic with public transport. "Its implementation consists of building parking lots that are connected to the city by a special line of public transport," Žára stated. According to the mayor's deputy Richard Mrázek (ANO), the system could work so that drivers pay for parking and do not have to pay a fare. "The ticket would be included in the parking price. It would be easier so that drivers do not have to worry about whether they have a ticket or not," Mrázek said. The parking lot will be in the area where cemetery visitors currently leave their parked cars. "Parking there is not charged. We will try to come up with a way for people visiting the cemetery to park there free for a while, while at the same time the new parking lot with barriers will serve for parking vehicles of drivers who will then use public transport," added Mrázek. At the first parking lot, the city will test how drivers will react. If it proves successful, additional park-and-ride parking lots will be created in other locations. "We have monitored more than a dozen other locations where they could be, and there is suitable access to public transport. For example, Hněvkovská Street or places in Královo Pole," Mrázek added.
