Prague already has its cable car.
Brno - The construction of a cable car to Brno's Špilberk Castle is, according to city leadership, closer to becoming a reality. The Brno City Council today approved a contract with PPP Centrum, under which the company will develop the cable car project. The city should thereby determine how much the entire project would actually cost. The company must submit the project within two months, and the city will pay 200,000 crowns for it. This was stated today by Brno City Hall spokesperson Pavel Žára.
According to the city, the development of the project is a necessary condition for the realization of the project, which will also involve the private sector. Such projects are commonly referred to as PPP (Public Private Partnerships).
The goal of the concession project is, according to city officials, to demonstrate the advantages of the cable car for Brno. "With this step, we will also definitively know what the financing options for the entire project are. At the same time, the study will show us suitable alternatives for revitalizing the cultural monument of Špilberk Castle," said Brno Mayor Roman Onderka (ČSSD).
According to him, the aim of the new cable car is to attract as many tourists as possible to Brno's landmark. However, the cable car should also serve older and disabled residents of Brno who may, for health reasons, no longer dare to hike up to the castle.
There is a steep slope leading to the castle, which visitors must climb when heading to the castle. City representatives claim the steep slope is the main reason for Špilberk's disconnection from urban life. The cable car should eliminate this barrier.
The park surrounding Špilberk is, according to Brno officials, unique. It is located right in the city center, additionally on the slopes of a hill that encircles it without interruption. In recent years, the city has invested tens of millions of crowns in the restoration of the park.
