Brno – The leadership of Brno has suspended the change to the zoning plan concerning the construction of the Špitálka district, as well as the area of the former textile factory Mosilana. This was announced in a press release by Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) and the councillor for urban planning and development Filip Chvátal (KDU-ČSL).

The Mosilana area is owned by a private investor who wants to build a modern residential quarter on its site. In March, the Financial Consortium company submitted a request for a demolition statement for the entire complex. The association Za Brno nezbourané and other institutions subsequently turned to the leadership of Brno in the form of an open letter, opposing the demolition of the buildings.

"The area contains important and valuable places from both historical and architectural perspectives. We want to protect such places and pass on their historical legacy to future generations. The Mosilana area has a chance to reconcile history with modern and smart city development. That is why we urgently began discussions with representatives of the investor to find a solution that will manage to preserve the genius loci of the original Mosilana even within the new construction," Hladík explained the leadership's decision.

The buildings of the former textile factory, which have been deteriorating for decades, are not protected as heritage sites. Their protection could be ensured by the establishment of municipal heritage zones, which the National Heritage Institute recently called for Brno to establish. Many buildings in the city center and its immediate surroundings lost their heritage protection due to an administrative error at the end of the 1980s.

"We will initiate a joint meeting with the investors, also involving the leadership of the city district. We will temporarily halt the change to the zoning plan to give us space to find a common solution. The goal is to rebuild the area, enabling both new housing and green spaces, including the incorporation of the Svitavský náhon stream. We want to finally give new life to this part of the city center, but not at any cost. I believe we will find a solution acceptable to both sides, for the city and the investor," said councillor Chvátal.
