Brno - Špilberk Castle in the heart of Brno is set to transform to become more attractive not only for tourists but also for the city's residents. Museum professionals welcome around 130,000 people annually across eight permanent exhibitions. By 2012, attendance is expected to reach 300,000 people. The city is preparing a project to transform Špilberk. The costs will amount to 235 to 250 million crowns, said Deputy Mayor Daniel Rychnovský (KDU-ČSL) to reporters today.
The city will seek European funds from the Regional Operational Program for the project; according to the deputy, the grant could cover up to 92 percent of the costs. He believes the chances of obtaining the funds are high, as Brno faces less competition in the Regional Operational Program.
According to Rychnovský, Špilberk, situated on a green hill in the city center, should attract more Brno residents. "So that, for example, a grandfather with grandchildren or grandmothers with grandchildren or young families can enjoy a walk there," he described. In recent years, the city has invested tens of millions to renovate the surrounding park. Improvements have been made to the landscaping, sidewalks, and even the pond.
Inside the castle, the main attractions for visitors are the museum exhibits, which today are predominantly static. In the future, they are set to become more interactive. Visitors may be able to explore the castle in a three-dimensional model, and the exhibitions will utilize video projections to aid navigation. The museum is also expected to host educational programs and workshops. "There will be a children's corner and lockers for families with children, study rooms will be available, and there will be the possibility to host family celebrations," said the deputy. According to him, the expansion of offerings will create 40 new jobs.
