Architects presented the first stage of modifications to the Krnov sports complex

Krnov - The team of architects from the U/U studio has presented a study for the first phase of modifications to public spaces around sports complexes in Krnov in the Bruntál region. The areas, which include several isolated complexes such as the winter stadium, athletic oval, and Sokol gym, aim to connect through a project comprising five phases costing 35 million crowns into a compact functioning entity. This was reported today by city spokesperson Dita Círová.

"The architectural firm that won the tender in 2020 has developed the architectural and landscaping study for the first phase and is beginning work on the project documentation for the building permit and construction work, which includes paths and roads, an expanded skatepark, the area around the Sokol gym, and facilities for athletes," she stated.

The U/U office succeeded in the competition called Krnov at the Start, which focused on the design of public spaces within the sports complex, accessibility for the public, and parking. "After winning the architectural competition, the overall design was largely completed. We reached out again to sports clubs, and the architects incorporated both their comments and the suggestions from the city and other stakeholders into the final design," said Kristýna Kutálková from the city development department.

The enclosed sports complex is in close proximity to the city center. In addition to external fences, individual sports facilities are often separated by barriers. "The complex has barriers within it; it does not function as an open public space but rather as a private sports facility, which is a shame. We prefer to break down fences and combine multiple functions. Therefore, we propose to make the complex as accessible as possible," said Martin Hrouda from the U/U office.

In addition to tearing down fences and establishing main thoroughfares, the architects focused on the area around the winter stadium and Sokol gym, the skatepark, and access to the complex from Smetanovy sady, linking it to the city center. At the winter stadium, both the parking system and the space adjacent to the athletic stadium are being modified.

A relaxation zone will also be created with picnic tables and greenery. In the adjacent area by the Sokol gym, where there are currently two tennis courts, a small square will be developed. "We want to create a recreational multifunctional area with playful furniture,” Hrouda stated. In the current entrance area of the athletic stadium, a space for warming up athletes and playing ball games will be created, with the athletes' facilities extending to the grandstand, and a sunken area behind the grandstand will accommodate a small pond with seating around it.

The focal point of the complex will be a transformer station, which, according to the architects' plan, will be enclosed by a lightweight steel structure, featuring an observation platform and seating. "Near it, we are creating facilities for tennis players, which will include changing rooms with showers on the lower level and a public café with a terrace on the upper level," Hrouda added.
