Start of the construction of the library at Humboldt University in Berlin

On December 6, 2005, the construction of a new eight-story library building for Humboldt University in Berlin began. It is expected to be completed in 2008. The competition for its design was won last year by architect Max Dudler. A total of 279 teams submitted competition proposals. Ivan Reimann took third place and will be giving a lecture next Wednesday on architecture in Brno. The main reading room of the winning design, measuring 70 x 12 x 20 m, evokes (in its monumentality) SLUB in Dresden. The library will unite 16 branches, which have until now been located in 40 different places. It will house 2,800,000 volumes, and the total costs will reach 75,000,000 euros. Info>
