Mostar - The appearance of the famous bridge in the Bosnian city of Mostar, which has been a symbol of the city for centuries, is being disrupted by the construction of a hotel in its immediate vicinity. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has urged the local authorities to order a halt to further work, the APA agency reported today. A foreign investor has already invested ten million euros (almost 282 million crowns) in the hotel construction. The Stari Most, which spanned the Neretva River for four centuries, was one of the most beautiful structures of its kind in the Balkans. It was completed in 1566 by architect Mimar Hajrudin on Roman foundations. The bold arch rose 20 meters above the river's surface and spanned 27 meters between its banks. However, during the Bosnian war from 1992 to 1995, it was shelled by Croatian tanks. Immediately after the conflict ended, its reconstruction was taken over by a Turkish company. The construction work, which cost 15 million euros, was completed two years ago. The Stari Most has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since July 15, 2005.
