In the international competition for the new headquarters of the Nobel Foundation in central Stockholm, the proposal by London architect David Chipperfield won, who invited the Berlin landscape architects Topotek 1 to shape a new park 'Nobel Trädgård' in the southern part of the site. The Nobel Center - 'Nobelhuset' - is to be built on the embankment of Nybrokajen near the Swedish National Museum designed by Schinkel's student Friedrich August Stüler. The competition jury praised Chipperfield's proposal for its “lightness and openness”, which is “a mediator of dignity and the embodiment of the ideals of the Nobel Prize, thus serving as an inspiration for future generations.” Chipperfield adds to his winning project: “The Nobel Prize is generally regarded as the most prestigious award for exceptional human achievements in the fields of science, literature, and world peace. The Nobel Center is not just a confirmation of a unique history but also a foundation upon which it will be possible to build a new completely open era. A period in which the achievements of the Nobel Prize will not only be preserved and accessible to historians but will become an active and living source of inspiration for future generations, to encourage their hopes and faith in human achievements that can contribute to a better world.” In the spatially very limited building, the two-story underground parking lot houses an auditorium, museum, conference rooms, offices, library, restaurant, café with a bar, and shop. The auditorium - 'Nobelsalen' - on the top floor also serves as the main hall with an amazing panoramic view of the city, where the Nobel Prize award ceremony will take place. The façade made of transparent glass, recurring panels, and stone elements will ensure dramatic transformations of the building throughout the day. Depending on the lighting conditions, it will “oscillate between massiveness and lightness, rigor and playfulness, closure and openness, reflecting the values of the Nobel Prize between tradition and modernity, history and the future.” The completion of the Nobel Center is planned for 2018.
