<Vinařské centrum Ribera del Duero from studio barozzi veiga>

Roa is a three-thousand-person village located in the southern Spanish province of Burgos. The local Ribera del Duero region boasts a winemaking tradition that spans over two thousand years. The dry, flat landscape here is ideal for the blue grape variety Tempranillo, which produces noble wines with strong coloring and good tannins.
Five years ago, an international architectural competition took place for the administrative building of the local wine region, where all samples with the DOC Ribeira del Duero certification are tested. The winning project by the Barcelona studio barozzi veiga was completed this May, and operations commenced with a typically wine-related celebration. The facility, covering 3,600 m², is located on the outskirts of the village at the site of the old city walls, marking a sharp boundary between settlement and landscape. The designers chose to incorporate surrounding historical structures into the design. The reconstructed 16th-century hospital now houses the administrative offices of the wine center. Two fragments of the former city walls, old masonry, and a 17th-century church portal were also utilized. The resulting square is defined by a quartet of new masses made from local stone. On the edge of the square, a tower rises, serving as an auditorium for 350 people. The representative space, based on an irregular floor plan, is illuminated from above by circular skylights. The prominent tower appears confident, yet it is sensitively integrated into the historical walls.
