Studio Steven Holl Architects, together with Rüssli Architects, is designing a new hotel, spa, and wine center for Loisium SAS in the French Alsace. The complex will be built on the edge of a forest, surrounded by vineyards to the south and east, and from its 100 rooms, it will be possible to see Switzerland and Germany in the distance. The backdrop of the building will be a red cliff from a former quarry. An ancient path runs through the plot, leading from the Marbach monastery, which in the past was traveled by pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. The concept of a branched structure, resembling the branches of a tree, will bring a unique order and spatial arrangement to the building on the sloping land. This branched concept also allows for the creation of diverse exterior spaces - the private area of the spa and a more public area for the restaurant. From the hotel corridors, rooms, and suites, there will be views of the surrounding landscape, the forest, and the vineyards. The concrete supporting structure will be clad in black wooden cladding, which will harmonize with the dark green of the surrounding forest and landscape. Two entrances will lead into the main hall; one from the lattice-covered southern parking lot and the other from the northern side. From the tree branch-shaped building, a multi-purpose pavilion will metaphorically bloom, clad in red patinated steel and glass in various shades of red, reminiscent of the nearby red rock of the former quarry. On the ground floor of the pavilion, there will be a wine gallery with direct access to the hotel restaurant. Above it will be a gathering space connected to the hotel hall, intended for hosting concerts, weddings, and other events. This space will have church-like acoustics with a reverberation time of less than two seconds, ideal for chamber music. The flower-shaped pavilion, located near the monastery and abbey, will also be a place of silence and contemplation.
