At the end of October, the results of the invited two-round competition to expand the Berlin Bauhaus Archive were announced, with local architect Volker Staab emerging as the winner. The jury, chaired by architect Hilde Léon, selected from a total of 41 submitted proposals. Ultimately, a glass five-story tower rising from a massive concrete platform stood out among the other German-speaking studios. Staab's tower is enveloped by slender steel columns that create the impression of stitching between the floors. The ramped promenade in front of the Gropius building from 1979 has been preserved. The new exhibition platform respectfully recedes into the background but still maintains a clear stance. The costs of 56.2 million euros (21.5 million for the renovation of the Gropius building and 34.7 million for Staab's new construction) will be shared by both the federal and state governments. The museum's renovation is planned to coincide with the approaching centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus school in Weimar. The overall completion of the new archive building is scheduled for 2021.
