Rome - Rome wants to start looking for sponsors abroad and raise money for the repairs of its Colosseum. At least five million euros (about 127.5 million crowns) are needed to save the famous ancient structure. According to Italian media, this was stated by the Mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno. This was reported by the DPA agency.

The Colosseum, at its peak, could hold up to 50,000 spectators. It is considered the largest amphitheater in the world. It was built by Emperor Vespasian from 69 to 79 AD. According to the latest data from the city's administration, it is visited by around four million people annually. The city earns up to 35 million euros (892.5 million crowns) a year from entrance fees.

City officials believe they will be able to find the money abroad. What was accomplished with the Sistine Chapel should also be possible in the case of the Colosseum, Mayor Alemanno thinks. The chapel underwent a thorough renovation in the 1980s, partly thanks to a generous contribution of three million dollars from Japan. Next year, repairs are expected at the Roman Forum, for example.
