The conference focuses on current strategic tools for planning and creating public spaces such as placemaking, urban acupuncture, tactical urbanism, and participatory planning in the context of a comprehensive approach and development strategies at the city level.

Contemporary progressive strategies for creating public spaces will be presented by recognized foreign experts in public space design:

Mike Lydon /The Street Plans Collaborative, NY/, who will speak about the tools, approach, and significance of tactical urbanism; Finnish architect Marco Casagrande /C-Lab/ will highlight the catalytic significance of urban acupuncture in the creation of public spaces and their importance in the regeneration of the city; Elena Madison /Project for Public Spaces, NY/ will share her experiences working with communities on the development and management concepts of public spaces.

The conference "PUBLIC SPACES" will take place on November 20 – 21, 2014 at Berlinka in the Slovak National Gallery.

The conference is organized by the Faculty of Architecture STU in Bratislava, Institute of Urbanism and Spatial Planning, with the support of the City of Bratislava, the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, in collaboration with the embassies of the USA, Finland, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Austrian Cultural Forum in Bratislava.

Part of the November dialogue will also include regular lectures as part of the international project "november talks", supported by the Sto Foundation, during which the Croatian studio NFO will give a lecture represented by architects Marunica and Ravnić on November 6, 2014, at 5:00 PM at the Faculty of Architecture.

On November 13, 2014, at 5:00 PM, there will also be a lecture by the world-renowned architect and designer Willa Alsop at the Faculty of Architecture.

This will be followed by two special lectures by Massimiliano Fuksas /Fuksas Architects, IT/ and Marco Casagrande /C-Lab/, which will take place directly at the PUBLIC SPACES conference.

The conference will also feature more than 20 civic projects in the public space of Bratislava. You can see how active people are transforming the space between buildings into lively and attractive places – markets, community, mobile, or rooftop gardens. They generate activities in the squares and streets, fight against, and challenge the growing visual smog and pollution of public spaces. They point out beautiful, interesting, and useful places and services, or they strive to transform and beautify neglected public spaces.
A series of video presentations will progressively introduce all the projects that can be viewed at SNG and at FA STU during the conference days.
