At the end of November, the winner of the new Ludwig Museum of Modern Art in Budapest was announced. The jurors were deciding between the projects of the Japanese studio SANAA and the Norwegian office Snøhetta, both of which simultaneously took first place in April of this year, after which the commission had half a year for a thorough analysis of the technical aspects, timeline, financial demands, and collaboration with the local office. The project was ultimately entrusted to the pair of Tokyo architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, whose layered white plates levitate on the eastern edge of the city park. Inside the museum, collections from the National Gallery of Hungarian Art from the period of 1800-1950 and contemporary art from the collections of the Ludwig Museum will be exhibited. The project is part of an ambitious plan to build four new museums and cultural institutions in the city park, which are expected to be completed by 2018. Both public and private institutions are involved in the grand project. The museum by SANAA is set to rise near the concert hall designed by another Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto.
