The main theme of the Polish pavilion for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai is an enlarged ornament. The winning design came from an architectural competition, where twelve proposals competed in the second round, and ultimately the Warsaw team of Wojciech Kakowski, Marcin Mostafa, and Natalia Paszkowska won.
The main goal of the authors was to create a surprising and attractive expression that would be instantly recognizable among dozens of other pavilions - “a recognizable and memory-evoking cultural ideogram”. The façade motif is inspired by Polish art of paper cutting and decorations, which is transferred into the décor of modern architecture. This creates a reference to traditions and folk art, without the result appearing folkloric. The resulting shape resembles modern sculpture, which can be ascended to the top. The entrance to the pavilion was created by lifting one of the corners of the pavilion. Info>
