Genoa (Italy) - The replacement for the bridge that collapsed in mid-August in Genoa, Italy, is expected to be completed by November of next year at the latest. According to Italian media, this was stated today by the governor of the Liguria region, Giovanni Toti, during the presentation of the plan for the new bridge. The bridge will be designed by the renowned architect and Genoa native Renzo Piano.

"We want to create a symbol for the future of the city. Renzo Piano's project reflects the simplicity of Liguria and is full of meanings. It can be built quickly," Toti said. The remnants of the old Morandi bridge, part of which collapsed, are to be removed by the end of September.

The area under the bridge is also set to change. A completely new neighborhood is expected to emerge there. The August bridge collapse also damaged several existing buildings, preventing their residents from returning. Approximately 600 people are left without a permanent roof over their heads.

"We want to turn this tragedy into a great opportunity for Genoa; in the end, we will have a city that is even more beautiful than before," said Marco Bucci, the mayor of the northern Italian port city, today.

According to the newspaper La Stampa, the new bridge from the workshop of Renzo Piano is expected to resemble a ship. The steel structure will be illuminated at night using electricity from solar panels. "The bridge should become a place of light, but without special effects," explained the 80-year-old architect Piano, who designed the road structure for his hometown free of charge. "The new bridge must have a structure that can be easily maintained and will last a thousand years," added Piano.

The collapse of the Morandi bridge on August 14 resulted in 43 fatalities. Piano said today that he cannot stop thinking about the dead. "I have been working on this project very intensively for three weeks. I am working on other things as well, but my thoughts continually return to the bridge," he stated.

Although, according to him, the new building should not be a "monument to the fallen," one lamp will commemorate each of the victims under the bridge.

Italian press also noted a "clumsy incident?" that occurred at the press conference where the new bridge project was presented today. The CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia accidentally broke a model of the planned structure. The company, led by Giovanni Castellucci, operated the collapsed Morandi bridge. Castellucci faced criticism in August for refusing to apologize for the disaster, stating that the company would wait for the conclusion of the investigation. Italian authorities are investigating twenty people in connection with the bridge collapse, including employees of Autostrade per l'Italia. Castellucci is also among those being investigated.
