In mid-February, information was released on the pages of Architekturzentrum Wien that the new director is Vorarlberg curator Angelika Fitz, who from January 1, 2017, will succeed the founder of AzW Dietmar Steiner, who has led this institution since 1993. The international selection process was announced in July of the previous year and attracted 33 applicants (half of whom were from Austria and a third were women). AzW has earned an international reputation over the past two decades, a standard that the new curator hopes to raise. The main goal of AzW is to explore the role of architecture in society, urgent topics, and to bridge the gap between architecture and urbanism. The new curator and her team will continue to promote international themes more strongly and anchor them in the culture of Austrian construction. Angelika Fitz has been active as an art theorist since 1998. She is the author of numerous exhibition projects in the fields of architecture, urbanism, and art. In 2003 and 2005, she was the commissioner for the Austrian contribution to the architectural biennale in Sao Paulo. Dietmar Steiner will bid farewell to AzW at the end of the year with an eloquently titled exhibition, “The End of Architecture.” More information >
